Frequently Asked Questions

Why are speed zone cameras being installed?

Over the past decade there has been a nationwide increase in pedestrian fatalities related to speeding and distracted driving. Automated enforcement encourages drivers to follow posted speed limits and remain attentive, especially in sensitive areas like school zones.

Automated speed enforcement is endorsed as a safety tool by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, AAA, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Safety Council.

Slower driving saves lives. A person is about 70% more likely to be killed if struck by a vehicle traveling 30 mph versus 25 mph. There is approximately a 93% chance of survival if a pedestrian is struck at 20 mph. Small differences in speed make a major difference in school zones.

My local school has a lot of speeders. How can I request a system?

Speed enforcement programs and locations are selected by the Milledgeville Police Department and local schools after a traffic study is performed to assess road conditions and safety needs.

Requests or concerns about additional locations may be sent directly to the Police Department using our general contact information.

How will I know where the cameras are?

The Police Department installs clearly visible signage advising drivers that roadways are enforced by speed cameras. In addition, a 30-day warning period is provided when new enforcement begins. During this period, drivers may receive Warning Notices instead of payable citations.

I received a Warning Notice. What do I do?

Warning Notices are courtesy notices used during the initial warning period to make drivers aware of increased enforcement in school zones. If you received a Warning Notice, no further action is required, but all drivers are strongly encouraged to obey posted speed limits.

What are the criteria for receiving a speeding ticket?

Under Georgia law, automated school zone speed citations are issued to drivers traveling at more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit in an enforced school zone.

How much is the fine?

The first violation is $75. Subsequent violations are $125 each. Payments are due by the “Pay By” date listed on your citation.

Can I view my violation?

Yes. Visit https://secure.speedviolation.com and enter your citation number. You may view photos and video of your violation.

What hours do the cameras operate?

School zone speed enforcement cameras operate from one hour before school until one hour after school. All monitored school zones and speed limits are clearly marked with signage.

I received a school zone speed ticket. How do I pay it?

You may mail a check or money order to the address printed on your citation using the pre-printed return envelope.

For faster service, you may also pay securely online at https://secure.speedviolation.com . Electronic payments post the same day, and you can receive an email confirmation.

For payment by phone, call 833-917-7333, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Will this affect my insurance or driving record?

School zone speed citations issued through automated enforcement are civil offenses, not criminal infractions. No points are assessed on your driving record for these violations. However, fines increase for repeat offenders.

How do the cameras work? Are they accurate?

The enforcement program utilizes state-of-the-art multi-dimensional radar capable of tracking and monitoring up to approximately 350 vehicles simultaneously. Radar is accurate within 0.1 mph.

A detailed maintenance and testing log is maintained at all times. Citations are not issued within any possible margin of error.

What happens to ticket revenue?

Under Georgia law, paid citation revenue must be used for law enforcement activities that increase public safety, such as police equipment, traffic safety initiatives, and school safety programs including school resource officers.

Where can I read the law on automated enforcement?

The governing law for automated school zone speed enforcement in Georgia is O.C.G.A. § 40-14-18. You can review the current statutory language at:

O.C.G.A. § 40-14-18 – Automated Traffic Enforcement (Lexis Advance)
