Communications Officer

Communications Officer
​Full-time (12 hour Shift)

General Requirements

Applicants must be United States citizens with no felony convictions, or misdemeanor convictions involving violence or moral turpitude. Applicants must have the following:
  • Current Georgia or National Communications Officer Certification (or must attain certification within 6 months of hiring)
  • Current GCIC-NCIC Certification (or attain certification within 6 months of hiring)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent​

​Additionally applicants should be able to perform the following:
  • Speak clearly and distinctly
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to multitask
  • Think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations
  • Operate teletype equipment to communicate with hearing impaired citizens
  • Operate on shift work and must be available to work weekends, evenings and/or holidays.

Job Overview

The Communications Officer performs a variety of duties in the operation of the City's Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) communication system including answering Emergency 911 and other calls from the general public requesting Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Utilities, other agencies and departments within the City of Milledgeville.

Duties also include dispatching police officer's to the scenes of crimes, violations, or in response to requests.  Candidate must be able to distinguish between emergency and non-emergency calls.  The Communications Officer is also responsible for maintaining the records of the police department, verifies and updates stolen vehicles and/or wanted individuals through NCIC/GCIC systems.

Work is performed with specific instructions and in accordance with departmental regulations.  The Communciations Officers is supervised by superior officers who review reports and records submitted for compliance with departmental policies.  Work is peformed in an office setting typicallys sitting at a desk or table.
